What is inclusive excellence? Why is it important? What steps can we take to help create a culture of inclusive excellence at Harvard, draw strength from diversity, and allow each of us to thrive? Join the JCSW as we explore these questions in a conversation with Dr. Sherri Ann Charleston, the first Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer of Harvard University.

Dr. Sherri Ann Charleston serves as the first Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer (CDIO) at Harvard University. She is one of the nation’s leading experts in diversity and higher education, and assumed her role in August 2020. Dr. Charleston is a historian trained in U.S. history with a focus on race, women, gender, citizenship, and the law, and an attorney with a specialization in constitutional and employment law.

Dr. Joan Y. Reede was appointed as the first Dean for Diversity and Community Partnership at Harvard Medical School in January 2002. She is responsible for the development and management of a comprehensive program that provides leadership, guidance, and support to promote the increased recruitment, retention, and advancement of underrepresented minority faculty at HMS.
